Tasting One for the Team: Chip Edition, part 1

Welcome back to Tasting One for the Team, where I (Liz) foist unusual snack foods on my hapless colleagues and document the results for posterity! (Also, amusement.)

For this next pair of posts, I decided to focus on potato chips. I just had a ton of them. Some came from local stores; some came from across the pond  – “thanks” to our dear friend Megan for those! – and all of them are extremely weird. It’s too much for one post, so I’ll cover half today and half next week; plus a special meat-flavored bonus snack! Get excited to laugh at our pain.

 

MARGARITA POLLO (CHICKEN)

We actually tried some really delicious roasted-chicken-flavored chips that Monique brought back from London last summer (Walkers, the UK branch of Lay’s, got it right). These were not them. Apparently the Margarita brand is native to Colombia, but Monique found these at a local bodega.

REACTIONS
“These taste just like Boston Market chicken. Like, why bother?”
“Meh.”
“They’re not terrible, but…” (shrug)

VERDICT
Pointless. Just eat some damn chicken. 2 out of 5 BLERGHs.

 

MCOY’S FLAME GRILLED STEAK

These were one of the imports. We had two steak-flavored chips to get through, and we started with the ridge-cut ones.

With “flame grilled steak flavour,” including MSG, dried yeast extract and…milk?

REACTIONS
“These taste like beef-flavored ramen.”
“It’s a little heavy on the fake liquid smoke flavor.”
“They’re weirdly…buttery.”

VERDICT
No thanks. 3 BLERGHs.

 

MACKIE’S FLAMEGRILLED ABERDEEN ANGUS

Oh yay, another flame-grilled steak flavor.

“Wait a minute, these are actually good.”
“Surprisingly tasty!”
“Yeah, I want another one.”
“We’ll definitely finish this bag.”

VERDICT
Would eat again. Nicely done, Mackie’s! Zero BLERGHs.

 

MACKIE’S HAGGIS AND CRACKED BLACK PEPPER

I was weirdly excited about this one. Maybe because I’ve never had haggis? (Turns out no one here has had haggis.) (Also, sadly, no haggis in the chips; just haggis seasoning and “natural flavourings.”) Anyway.

“It smells like bologna.”
“It TASTES like bologna.”
“I am NOT a fan. Dislike.”
“It’s like straight-up lunch meat. Like Oscar Mayer lunch meat.”
“This is weird, but not that gross.”

Not outright offensive, but profoundly strange. 3 BLERGHs.
